Step 1: Which build do I need: x64, arm64 or x86?
Find your architecture
Open Start, then Settings › System › About. Under Device specifications, the System typeentry tells you whether your Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit and what kind of processor you have.Microsoft: System type
| If your PC is… | Choose |
|---|---|
| A 64-bit Intel or AMD PC (most computers) | windows-x64 |
| An ARM PC, such as a Snapdragon laptop | windows-arm64 |
| A 32-bit version of Windows | windows-x86 |
The labels follow the README’s own descriptions of each build. README
Installer or portable?
- Installer (
.msi) is the standard Windows installer package and the main “standalone for Windows” download. - Portable (
-portable.zip) is described on the PhotoCraft page as “unzip and run, no install”.
Step 2: Download from an official source
Use the PhotoCraft page on getartcraft.com (the README’s recommended route) orthe latest GitHub release. File names look like this, where <ver> is the version number:
| Build | Installer | Portable |
|---|---|---|
| x64 | photocraft-<ver>-windows-x64.msi | photocraft-<ver>-windows-x64-portable.zip |
| arm64 | photocraft-<ver>-windows-arm64.msi | photocraft-<ver>-windows-arm64-portable.zip |
| x86 | photocraft-<ver>-windows-x86.msi | photocraft-<ver>-windows-x86-portable.zip |
Download SHA256SUMS.txt from the same release too. When this wiki was checked, the newest release was v0.6.0(2026-10-10), and its assets matched these names. Other builds are listed on the download page.READMEReleases
Step 3: How do I verify the download?
Open PowerShell in the folder with the file and compute its SHA256 hash. Get-FileHash uses SHA256 by default, and the algorithm can be set explicitly:Microsoft: Get-FileHash
Get-FileHash .\photocraft-<ver>-windows-x64.msi -Algorithm SHA256Compare the Hash value with the line for the same file in SHA256SUMS.txt. They must match exactly.
The README says the Windows installers and executables are code-signed, while the project’s installation page cautions that signing depends on the release configuration and an artifact’s existence is not proof it was signed. To look at the signature, run the following; a validly signed file reports a Status of Valid. This cmdlet is available on Windows only. READMEInstall docMicrosoft: Get-AuthenticodeSignature
Get-AuthenticodeSignature .\photocraft-<ver>-windows-x64.msiStep 4: How do I install it?
- Installer: double-click the
.msiand follow the installer. - Portable: unzip the file to a folder of your choice and run PhotoCraft from there.
Step 5: How do I open a PSD?
Start PhotoCraft and choose File › Open. PhotoCraft opens and saves layered PSD and PSB files. It re-writes image resources, layer records and the composite when it saves, so a re-saved file is not byte-identical to the original; work on a copy of anything important. README
On Windows PhotoCraft draws with a GPU compositor built on wgpu, and the README lists DX12 among its graphics back ends.README
Learn the keyboard shortcuts next; they follow Photoshop’s.
Advanced: build it from source
If you have the Rust toolchain installed, you can build and run PhotoCraft directly (commands from the README):
git clone https://github.com/storytold/photocraft
cd photocraft
cargo run --release -p photocraft -- image.psd # the desktop app
cargo test --workspace # the test suiteThe last argument opens image.psd on launch. See the documentation book for build details. README
If something goes wrong
- Check the known issues on the download page.
- Search or open an issue on GitHub. The README asks for your OS, document size, layer count and a screenshot.
- Tell the team what broke on Discord.
PhotoCraft on Windows: quick answers
Which PhotoCraft build do I need on Windows?
Most Windows PCs need the x64 build, which the README describes as 64-bit Intel and AMD. Snapdragon and other ARM PCs need arm64, and 32-bit versions of Windows need x86. To check, open Settings, then System, then About, and read System type under Device specifications.
Is the PhotoCraft Windows installer code-signed?
The README says the Windows installers and executables are code-signed. The project’s installation page cautions that signing depends on the release configuration and that an artifact existing is not proof it was signed, so run Get-AuthenticodeSignature on the file and look for a Status of Valid.
Should I choose the MSI installer or the portable zip?
Both are published for every Windows architecture. The MSI is the standard installer. The portable zip is described on the PhotoCraft page as unzip and run with no install, which suits trying the app without changing your system.
How do I open a PSD file in PhotoCraft on Windows?
Start PhotoCraft and choose File then Open. PhotoCraft opens and saves layered PSD and PSB files, but a re-saved file is not byte-identical to the original, so work on a copy of anything important.
