Intel x64 or Apple Silicon: which file?
Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Apple Silicon Macs show a Chip field; Intel Macs show Processor. Apple: chip
Apple Silicon Macs
If About This Mac shows an Apple chip, choose the macos-universal.dmg desktop package. The README includes Apple Silicon in that universal build. You do not need to find a separately named arm64 DMG. Platform README
Intel Macs (x64)
If it shows an Intel processor, choose the same macos-universal.dmg. A Windows x64 package or Linux x86_64 package is for a different operating system, even when the CPU architecture sounds similar. Platform README
Download the app and check the file
The package snapshot was checked on 2026-10-15; newer assets may exist. See the checked version and release history or official latest release before installing. Releases
Download the checked Mac desktop DMG: photocraft-0.9.0-macos-universal.dmg. Release checksums
In Terminal, from the download folder, compute the SHA256 and compare it with the same filename in the official SHA256SUMS.txt. The checked file's expected hash is shown here; the browser checksum verifier can also compare a selected file locally.
shasum -a 256 "photocraft-0.9.0-macos-universal.dmg"06503eb1c845990e99f8824831cc73b274e2b1dbe4461eb6460dfc9a6008239dA match identifies the bytes in the checksum list; obtain both the package and list from the official release. Release checksums
Install the DMG and open a test document
- Open the downloaded DMG. Follow its installer if one appears; otherwise drag the app into Applications as the disk image instructs.
- Eject the disk image and open PhotoCraft from Applications.
- Choose File › Open and use a copy of a PSD. Save the result separately, reopen it, and compare the layers and rendering before using it for important work.
Apple documents disk-image installation; PhotoCraft's README describes layered PSD/PSB support and warns that the editor is not ready to replace Photoshop for daily professional work. These are documented steps, not a claim that this wiki tested the native Mac binary. Apple: installPlatform README
If macOS reports a signing or security warning
The README describes signed and notarized Mac builds. The installation book cautions that an artifact existing does not prove signing. Confirm the release and checksum, retain the exact warning, and use the bug-reporting guide with your macOS version, chip and package filename. Platform READMEInstall doc
Can I install PhotoCraft with Homebrew?
Yes, if you already use Homebrew: its homebrew/cask tap lists a photocraft cask. Homebrew cask
brew install --cask photocraftWhen checked on 2026-10-15, the cask listed version 0.9.0, installed PhotoCraft.app into /Applications and downloaded the universal DMG from the project's GitHub release, with the same SHA256 as that release's SHA256SUMS.txt. Homebrew caskRelease checksums
The README does not mention Homebrew and the cask is maintained in Homebrew's own tap, so treat it as a convenience route rather than a project-published one, and compare the version Homebrew installs with the checked version history. Homebrew's site says it supports macOS Sequoia 15 and newer; on an older macOS, use the DMG route above. This wiki did not run the cask. Platform READMEHomebrew
The CLI ZIP is a different package
The universal photocraft-cli-<version>-macos-universal.zip contains the command-line tool. The README says its first run may require an online notarization check because a bare binary cannot carry the DMG's stapled ticket. Choose it for automation, not for launching the graphical editor. Platform README
For another operating system use the package picker and browser trial, Windows installation steps or Linux installation guide. After installation, see Mac keyboard shortcuts.
PhotoCraft Mac questions
Is there a separate PhotoCraft download for Apple Silicon?
The checked release has one universal macOS DMG for both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. The CLI is a separate universal ZIP; it is not the desktop editor.
Does PhotoCraft support Intel Macs?
The official README lists the universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel, and the maintainers’ release documentation labels the build “macOS 11+”. Neither states a tested minimum or the performance to expect on every Intel Mac.
What if macOS blocks the app?
Verify the official release, checksum and signing information. The README describes signed and notarized builds, while the installation documentation says signing depends on the release configuration. Do not remove quarantine or disable Gatekeeper to work around an unexplained warning; report the exact message to the project.
Can I install PhotoCraft on a Mac with Homebrew?
Yes. Homebrew’s homebrew/cask tap has a photocraft cask: brew install --cask photocraft. When checked on 2026-10-15 it listed version 0.9.0 and downloaded the official universal DMG from GitHub Releases. The PhotoCraft README does not mention it and this wiki did not run it, so confirm the version against the official release.
Is this an iPhone or iPad app?
This guide covers the Rust desktop editor from storytold/photocraft. Its macOS DMG is not an iOS App Store package. Check the developer and repository before choosing a similarly named mobile app.
